Cinn-apple Pie
Ingredients:
1 graham cracker crust (premade or fresh)
1 regular pastry pie crust
8 medium sized granny smith apples, peeled and sliced
1 tbsp vanilla extract
1/2 cup unsalted butter
3 tbsp all-purpose flour
2 tbsp water
1/2 cup white sugar
1/2 cup brown sugar
1 tbsp cinnamon
A dash of nutmeg (optional)
A few drops of maple syrup (optional)
Directions:
1. Preheat oven to 425 degrees F (220 degrees C).
2.Melt the butter in a saucepan on low heat. After the butter is melted, add in vanilla and water. Mix together dry ingredients in mixing bowl until evenly distributed. Slowly stir in dry ingredients to butter mixture until it thickens a little.
3. With apples in a large mixing bowl, slowly drizzle butter-cinnamon mixture over sliced apples. Reserve about 1-2 tbsp of mixture.

Sophia Loren’s Recipes and Memories $4.98 In Sophia Loren’s Recipes and Memories, one of our most beloved actresses presents 100 of favorite Italian family recipes. Sophia has dedicated this book to her grandmother Luisa, with whom she lived in Pozzuoli, the small city near Naples, during World War II. Watching her grandmother turn their humble wartime rations into succulent dishes left a lasting impression on Sophia, and it is this spirit of improvisation that marks the recipes in her new cookbook. Along with Nonna Luisa’s specialties, Sophia’s recipes come from all over Italy: a wonderful bean soup from Tuscany, Neapolitan pizzas, a risotto from Venice, fish from Sicily and, vegetable preparations from the South. Many of the recipes are variations on the classics, such as Vermicelli alia Sophia (which features her own interpretation of pesto sauce) and Luisa’s Minestrone (based on her grandmother’s version of the essential vegetable soup). Sophia’s love of pasta is well-known, and the book includes a wonderful selection of pasta recipes, as well as dishes of risotto and polenta. Simple antipasti and recipes for meat, poultry, and fish round out this collection. Among the homey desserts are a flourless apple cake and an irresistible ricotta pie. In addition to the recipes, Sophia shares poignant anecdotes about her Neapolitan childhood and her illustrious filmmaking career. She takes us behind the scenes of some of the many movies she made in Italy with such stars and dear friends as Marcello Mastroianni and Cary Grant and shares the recipes that she discovered on location for various movies. Recipes and Memoirs of a Creole Cook $59.34 Twain Michael Henry loves to cook. His grandparents were Philip and Claudia Randolph of Randolph Caterers. They won many bids to cater some of the biggest Mardi Gras balls in New Orleans. He took a genuine interest in cooking even after both of his grandparents passed on. One day when he was thirteen, his mother accepted a large party to cater. Unfortunately, two days before the function, she was admitted to the hospital. Her first instinct should have beento cancel, but she had more confidence in Twain than that. It took him through the night and the next day, but he had it done on time and in boxes for his brother to take to Audubon Place. Those days of doing things one way, the right way, paid off. From that day on, there wasn t anything he couldn t do if he put his mind to it; especially in a pot. Recipes and Memoirs of a Creole Cook is a New Orleans compilation of personal and family recipes created and enjoyed through the years. In addition, most of the recipes begin with a comical story that may or may not have anything to do with the recipe. Some of the stories are accompanied by illustrations that attempt to bring a visual picture to the situation at hand. He started this effort in 1997 and printed and sold about 600 copies. It was a small scaleproject, filled with stories, but with no pictures of the finished recipes. Since then, his cooking expertise has further improved. He has owner/chef restaurant years under his belt, although he ll be the first to say that he is not classically trained. He has also since won several 1st Place awards for dishes enclosed in this book and still appears as a chef for multiple charityevents every year. His favorite charity, however, is Scholars Inc., as he founded it in 2007 to help African-American youth in his local school district to compete for life, scholarships and US Academy Appointments. This book will be given to donors and sold to the mildly curious. All proceeds will go to Scholars Inc. The recipes in this book range from easy to complex. The flavors, no matter how they endup, have their roots in New Orleans. He has traveled to many states and countries eager to return with ideas and flavors to enhance his native cuisine. This book is the culmination of most of what he has learned. It is a historical document of his family that he is happy to share with anyone who wants to partake. |

Standards: Recipes for Reality $31.93 Standards are the means by which we construct realities. There areestablished standards for professional accreditation, for the environment, forconsumer products, for animal welfare, for the acceptable stress for highwaybridges, for healthcare, for education–for almost everything. We are surrounded bya vast array of standards, many of which we take for granted but each of which hasbeen and continues to be the subject of intense negotiation. In this book, LawrenceBusch investigates standards as "recipes for reality." Standards, heargues, shape not only the physical world around us but also our social lives andeven our selves. Busch shows how standards are intimately connected to power–thatthey often serve to empower some and disempower others. He outlines the history offormal standards and describes how modern science came to be associated with themoral-technical project of standardization of both people and things. He examinesthe use of standards to differentiate and how this affects our perceptions; hediscusses the creation of a global systems of audits, certifications, andaccreditations; and he considers issues of trust, honesty, and risk. After exploringthe troubled coexistence of standards and democracy, Busch suggests guidelines fordeveloping fair, equitable, and effective standards. Taking a uniquely integratedand comprehensive view of the subject, Busch shows how standards for people andthings are inextricably linked, how standards are always layered (even if oftenaddressed serially), and how standards are simultaneously technical, social, moral, legal, and ontological devices. |
